The beauty of this day lies in its simplicity—by offering a few words of encouragement, you can bring happiness to someone.

Your words have the power to uplift someone who may be feeling down, motivate someone who is struggling, or inspire someone to recover from a setback.

A small act of encouragement can be the spark that transforms a loved one’s outlook. Praising and encouraging someone’s efforts is a valuable habit, not just on this day but throughout the entire year.

History of the National Day of Encouragement

The National Day of Encouragement originated in 2007 when a group of young leaders at the National Leadership Forum at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, initiated The Encouragement Project. These young individuals recognized a pressing issue: a lack of encouragement among the youth was contributing to their struggles. They decided to take action, creating a special day dedicated to uplifting others, which became known as the National Day of Encouragement.

A Day of Healing After 9/11

Given that the day before, September 11, is a somber day in American history, September 12 was chosen as a day for people to come together, offering support and encouragement to those still grappling with the grief and trauma of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The National Day of Encouragement thus became a time to honor the victims and show solidarity against the impact of hatred and violence.

Official Recognition and Proclamations

The first official to recognize the National Day of Encouragement was Belinda LaForce, the then-mayor of Searcy, who issued a proclamation on August 22, 2007, with the inaugural celebration held on September 12 that year. Shortly thereafter, Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe officially declared September 12 as “State Day of Encouragement”.

In 2007, President George W. Bush further cemented its significance by signing a document that recognized it as the National Day of Encouragement. Additionally, a Senate resolution was introduced by Arkansas Senator Mark Pryor, which was passed unanimously on September 13, 2011.
